Visuals in The Shining

The Shining Hallway

The Shining is possibly the most well known of Kubrick's films, for good reason. The Shining has some of the most iconic and memorable imagery in film history. It is a perfect example of how the strategic use of color and lighting can create a deeply immersive atmosphere. The film also hits every mark as a psychological, horror film. One of the most notable visual elements in The Shining is the use of the color red. Red is used extensively throughout the film to symbolize danger, violence, and madness. The color red is prominently featured in key scenes, such as the blood pouring out of the elevator and the infamous "Here's Johnny!" scene.

The Overlook Hotel

The Overlook Hotel itself is a character in the film, with its vast, empty hallways and eerie atmosphere contributing to the sense of isolation and dread. The use of symmetrical framing and long tracking shots adds to the unsettling feeling, making the viewer feel as though they are being drawn into the hotel's sinister world. Overall The Shining is one of the best examples of Kubrick's mastery of visual storytelling.
